Today I would like to talk about New York City and the internship opportunities it offers.
The “Big Apple” is everything its supporters and critics claim: an adrenaline-charged, history-laden place that never sleeps, rarely apologizes, and works harder and longer hours than anywhere else. It’s also a town of icons, both past and present – you’ll find it hard to move about the city without encountering a view of something world-famous, from the lovely green sward of Central Park to the mammoth Brooklyn Bridge to the cathedral-like Grand Central Terminal. The city’s boundless energy and spirit will suck you in and make you want to come back again and again.
Being a young professional in NYC is an extremely rewarding experience that will enrich both your personal and professional portfolio. Getting the chance to work for one of the companies located in Manhattan will add incredible value to your resume, making it rise to the top of the stack or might even turn into a full-time position!

Today our blog will feature the story of one of our Alumni and ex staff member, Alyssa Paugh. She is gonna share with us her experience as a participant and as a summer staff member, the experience that changed her life forever and made her a “Dreamer”!

“Looking back at my sophomore year of college, I can honestly say that I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Aside from getting good grades and being actively involved in extracurricular activities, I had a hard time putting my finger down on what exactly I wanted to accomplish professionally during my college years. I knew it was time to find an internship, but I didn’t really know how to start or where to look. My dad actually sent me the link to the Dream Careers (at the time called “University of Dreams”) website. Like many students who view the page and take in all of its benefits, my immediate reaction was that it was too good to be true. I thought about what I knew I wanted: I wanted to live in New York City. I wanted a summer internship where I felt challenged. Lastly, I wanted to feel like I was doing something that would not only benefit my professional life, but also make me happy. I filled out the enrollment application and got a phone call about a week later. I was accepted into the program, and my trek to a real New York internship started immediately. It was that easy.
I was a Dreamer in the New York Union Square summer of 2010 program. I might just be partial, but I am 100% positive that I had the most amazing Dreamer staff that could possibly exist. Maybe every Dreamer thinks they have the best staff, but hey, there’s definitely nothing wrong with that! They were so welcoming and made the entire experience as easy and comfortable as possible. I interned at a boutique entertainment and lifestyle public relations agency called Sarah Hall Productions, Inc. They manage publicity for all kinds of celebrity athletes, authors, chefs, etc. It was a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment and I learned so much there during my first week alone. Having the Dreamer staff around to host activities and check up on us just made the entire experience that much better. I felt that I could go to them for anything I needed and was confident that they would be able to help me every time. My experience was so incredible and I felt the only real way to show my gratitude to the company and to the people who gave me this amazing opportunity was to give back. So, what did I do? I sent my application in to work as a summer staffer for 2011.
Initially, I wanted to stay in New York and staff the same program that I participated in. Little did I know, that is NOT what was going to happen. I ended up getting hired as the events and community specialist on the summer staff team for the London program! Traveling abroad and working for a company that is so near and dear to my heart is an experience that I find extremely hard to explain through words alone. To watch Dreamers come to a different country and pursue their career goals while developing lasting friendships reminded me every day why I loved my job. To be a participant turned staff member in this company has given me more than I could have asked for both professionally and personally. I’m now an intern at Cosmopolitan magazine and I can honestly say that I would not have developed the courage or the connections to land such an opportunity without this program. Anyone who ends up involved with Dream Careers in some way, shape or form has a Dream. This program is for people who believe that they can accomplish anything and for those willing to work and explore in order to find what it is that makes them truly happy. “If it looks good, you’ll see it. If it sounds good, you’ll hear it. If it’s marketed right, you’ll buy it, but if it’s real…you’ll feel it.”
